Is my journal data backed up anywhere? +
No. All your data is stored locally on your device and never leaves it. There is no cloud backup, no iCloud sync, and no server on our end storing your entries. This means if you delete the app or lose your device without a local device backup, your entries cannot be recovered. This is by design — your thoughts are truly private.
What happens when I burn an entry? +
When you burn an entry, it is permanently deleted from your device. There is no recovery. The burn ritual — the breathing exercise and animation — is designed to make that deletion feel intentional, not accidental. Once burned, the entry is gone.
I lost my entries after updating / reinstalling. Can I get them back? +
Unfortunately, no. Because your entries are stored locally and never synced to a cloud service, reinstalling the app or restoring from a factory reset will not preserve them. Entries are only recoverable if you have a full device backup (via iTunes or Apple's device backup feature) that was made before the data was lost. We understand this is frustrating — it's the tradeoff of true privacy.
How do I restore my Ember Premium purchase? +
Go to Settings inside the app, then tap "Upgrade to Premium." On the Premium screen, tap "Restore Purchases." This will check with Apple and re-activate your purchase if you've previously bought Ember Premium on this Apple ID. Make sure you're signed into the same Apple ID you used when you first purchased.
What is included in Ember Premium? +
Ember Premium is a one-time purchase (not a subscription) that unlocks: unlimited burns per month, all premium journaling prompts, and the Auto-Burn feature (schedule entries to delete automatically after 24 hours, 7 days, or 30 days). Free accounts include 5 burns per month and access to all free prompts.
Face ID isn't working. What do I do? +
Make sure Face ID is enabled in your iPhone's Settings app (Settings → Face ID & Passcode). Then, inside Ember Journal, go to Settings and ensure Biometric Authentication is toggled on. If Face ID is set up on your device and enabled in the app, it should prompt you automatically when unlocking. If you continue to have trouble, please contact us.
How do I cancel or get a refund? +
Ember Premium is a one-time, non-recurring purchase — there is nothing to cancel. Refund requests for App Store purchases are handled by Apple. You can request a refund through Apple's reportaproblem.apple.com website. If you have questions about a specific charge, feel free to reach out to us and we'll do our best to help.
How do I delete all my data? +
Inside the app, go to Settings → Reset All Data. This will permanently delete all your journal entries and reset the app to its initial state. Alternatively, simply deleting the app from your iPhone will remove all locally stored data. Because we store nothing on our servers, there is nothing else to delete.
